Arms RegistrationThe art and science of heraldry are as significant and meaningful today as they were during heraldry's infancy in the 13th century. Achievements, family connections, and cultural roles can be communicated visually today in a symbolic language used for more than a thousand years. The Augustan Society registers armorial bearings for both individuals and institutions. This service is available to both members and non-members. To petition for arms registration, click here. Individuals and organizations must meet at least one of these criteria: 1. Want to develop their personal or corporate coat of arms 2. Have personally received or inherited arms granted by, or registered with, recognized heraldic authorities, including:
3. Have assumed arms and their direct, legitimate descendants who have inherited such. Petition Requirements Every petition submitted is reviewed by the Heraldry Committee to ensure that the arms in question: 1. Demonstrate good taste 2. Are consistent with the established rules of heraldry 3. Do not duplicate the arms belonging to another person (tantamount to identity theft!) 4. All petitions submitted must include an appropriate and accurate blazon (a detailed written description of the arms using proper and traditional heraldic terminology) 5. Documentation of the origin of said arms (if granted, matriculated, inherited, or assumed as may be the case). 6. All parts of one's achievementincluding mottoesmay be registered with the Society. Symbols of noble or royal rank, such as coronets, crowns, or supporters, will be considered on a case-by-case basis by the Justiciar General and may require prior recognition by the Royalty & Nobility Committee. Approval of Your Petition for Registration
Upon approval of petitions, armigers will receive a certificate of registration, or brevet, that depicts their arms along with its blazon or written description of the coat of arms. The arms may also be selected for publication in upcoming volumes of The Augustan Society Roll of Arms or in other Society publications or media. It should be noted that registration of a person's personal coat of arms with the Society is a prerequisite for membership in the Augustan Society's sub-groups, the Order of the Augustan Eagle and the Noble Company of the Rose. In addition, the Heraldry Committee includes various Vice-Justiciars with knowledge and expertise in various heraldic traditions. As such, they can provide petitioners with invaluable information regarding specific protocols or customs, and aid in verifying proper written descriptions of coats of arms. |
