Membership Privileges, 2008

Annually, the Board of Directors of The Augustan Society, Inc., sets the privileges of membership for the following term. Reviewing and setting on an annual basis is done to reflect changes, economic trends, and staffing abilities of the Society. Those privileges for the current term (subject to physical limitations brought about by the closure of our California headquarters) are:

  1. Access to items in the Society's library of over 100,000 items, including books, journals, maps, pamphlets, prints, videos, photographs, etc. (Note: Due to the library collection being in storage, access presently requires substantial advance notice and labor fees involved in retrieving specific items.);
  2. Research and photocopying services are available if a member cannot visit the library in person; these services are provided at a reduced rate for members. (Note: Due to the library collection being in storage, this service requires substantial advance notice and labor fees involved in retrieving specific items.);
  3. Subscription to the official journal of the Society, The Augustan Omnibus: an International Journal of History, Heraldry, Genealogy, and Chivalry, at a reduced rate of $16.00 (cover price is $24.00 per volume);
  4. May order at a 10% discount previous issues of our journals:

    4. Journal of Royal & Noble Genealogy,
    5. Germanic Genealogist,
    6. The Colonial Genealogist,

  5. May receive a 10% discount on other items purchased from our headquarters, and also items offered for sale on our web site, ;
  6. May request a free listing of the contents of The Augustan from Volume VII, Number 2, and from all other publications listed above;
  7. Members may join more than 60 committees of the Society which cater to the special interests of the membership;
  8. Qualifying members may be elected Fellows of The Augustan Society, Inc.;
  9. Qualifying members may be elected to membership in the Hereditary Order of Armigerous Augustans;
  10. Qualifying Fellows may be elected to membership in the Order of the Augustan Eagle;
  11. Qualifying members may be elected to membership in the Order of Descendants of Ireland;
  12. Qualifying members may be elected to membership in the Order of Descendants of Scotland;
  13. Qualifying members may be elected to membership in the Order of the Conqueror;
  14. Qualifying members may be elected to membership in the Order of the Conqueror's Companions;
  15. Qualifying members may be elected to membership in the Society of Descendants of the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem;
  16. Qualifying members may be received as members of the Noble Company of the Rose;
  17. Members may obtain and wear, following the guides set by the Society, the medal of membership, miniature, lapel pin; and the insignia available for the other groups listed above;
  18. Members may attend the invitational meetings, lectures, classes, and field trips which may be held;
  19. Members receive all mailings from the Society at first class, and for those overseas, by air;
  20. Members may register their personal coat of arms, that of an ancestor, corporate arms, or an armorial banner with the Society;
  21. From time to times coats of arms registered with the Society are selected for inclusion in a published roll of arms (three published to date, each of 100 arms), hardbound, with arms registered by members being given priority in selection for each roll;
  22. The most outstanding member of the Society may be given the "George R. Balling Award" each year, including the member's name inscribed on a maintained plaque;
  23. Members who have received the George R. Balling Award five times may be awarded the "Dame Evelyn J.T. Metzler Award";
  24. Members may obtain at a 50% discount copies of the 39 inter-connecting charts in the "Descents from Antiquity" project, which is a conjectural first effort project showing descent from the Pharaohs of the XVII Dynasty of Egypt to modern times;
  25. Members receive free advice on a wide variety of topics from genealogical research strategies, heraldic usage, category type of Orders of Chivalry and Orders of Knighthood, historical research in many topic areas, and in most all related areas;
  26. Members may obtain reprints of articles appearing in many of our publications at a 10% discount (520 reprints are currently available from stock; this is an expanding project and additional reprints are added periodically);
  27. Members may have photocopying services at a reduced rate;
  28. Members may submit free inquiries for publication which are directed to the appropriate publication;
  29. Members may submit manuscripts for publication in the journals published by the Society;
  30. Members manuscripts will have priority for publication in the journals published by the Society;
  31. Members may vote and hold office in the Society;
  32. Members may borrow some books, periodicals, and videos for home use, with the permission of the Society Librarian (Note: Due to the library collection being in storage, access presently requires substantial advance notice and labor fees involved in retrieving specific items.);
  33. Members are accorded the postnominal initials "MAS"; (Fellows of the Society "FAS");
  34. Members receive a membership card and a handsome certificate of membership suitable for framing. (All of the allied groups of the Society mentioned above issue membership certificates.);
  35. Members may take justifiable pride in belonging to a distinguished international Society.

The privileges listed above are those of Regular, Life, and Associate members of the Society (not privileges of the "Friends" association nor Subscribers).
