The Society of Descendants of the Conquest (SDC) is a lineage group pendant to the Augustan Society. It was originally two separate groups: The Order of Descendants of the Conqueror and the Order of Descendants of the Conqueror's Companions. These are now merged, as it has been found that nearly all who qualify for one also qualify for the other.
The purpose of the Society is to honor the memory and accomplishments of William the Conqueror, Duke of Normandy, and King of England, and his companions in the Conquest, as well gathering together persons of Norman royal and noble ancestry, preserving their genealogical records, and focusing on the study of the history of England and Normandy in the 11th Century.
The two original groups were both founded on the 9th of September 1980.
Membership is available in two classes:
-
Membership as a Descendant of the Conqueror is open to those who can demonstrate unbroken descent from William the Conqueror and his wife Matilda of Flanders.
-
Membership as a Descendant of the Companions is open to those who can demonstrate unbroken descent from one of the 39 known companions of William the Conqueror at the Battle of Hastings.
Applicants are required to submit a fully documented genealogy along with the application fee and dues. GEDCOM files are preferred, but not required.
The entry fee is $100 for any number of classes at once; $50 for adding classes later; plus a $25 genealogist's fee for each lineage submitted, including corrections and extensions.
Those applicants who are approved will receive a membership certificate and the insignia (when available), consisting of a lapel pin. The arms of the Society have not yet been determined, but may be similar to those shown on this page above. The insignia will be a lapel pin showing the inescutcheon from the arms.
In addition, the genealogies submitted by members may be published from time to time by the Society, as well as in proposed lineage books. They will also be employed in the "Family of Augustans" project.
Additional material on sources for lineages is available for both Descendants of the Conqueror and Descendants of the Companions, and for lineage format, all of which are commended to the attention of applicants.
